Maud Anna Evans Joynt (1868-1940), Celtic scholar, linguist, feminist, vegetarian and Buddhist, was ahead of her time. Born in Roscommon, she learned Greek age 5 and went on to gain a first-class hons BA and MA in modern literature from the Royal University.

Violet Gibson (1876-1956), Dubliner famous for shooting Benito Mussolini in 1926. Of the dictator's four would-be assassins, she came closest. Now Dublin City Council has voted to put up a plaque to her. After the shooting, she was committed to a UK asylum.
